Greetings and Happy New Year Fellow Consortium Students! Today marks the start of the octave of the Prayer for Christian Unity 2012. The theme this year is “We Will All Be Changed by
the Victory of Our Lord Jesus Christ,” from St. Paul in I Corinthians 15:51- 58. This week in a very special way let unite our daily prayers, joys, sufferings, work and study to Jesus Christ the head of our mystical body, His church. There are many events and prayer services this week through out Washington, D.C. and Dr. Larry Goleman, director of the WTC has compiled them in an excellent blog post found here: http://ecumenismintheconsortium.blogspot.com/

WTC meets SCM USA

The Washington Theological Student Board is proud to have connected, and welcomed to the board delegates from the Student Christian Movement USA (SCM USA). The SCM USA is a national member of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF), which is a student‐led, ecumenical, grassroots organization, that actively seeks justice and peace, speaks truth to power, and works to end oppression in communities on local, national, and global levels by empowering students and young people to claim their voice, exercise leadership skills, engage in innovative theological reflection, and build transformational networks of relationship in the Church and the wider world. Many leaders in the SCM USA are currently students in the WTC!

Started in 1895, the WSCF is comprised of 100+ national SCM’s which span the globe. Founded in 1895, WSCF has empowered students and formed ecumenical leaders such as Dietrich Bonhöffer, Steve Biko, Kwame Nkrumah, Willem Visser’t Hooft (First General Secretary of the World Council of Churches), John R. Mott (Nobel Peace Prize 1946), Phillip Potter, and Frère Roger, founder of the Taizé community.

Connection with the WSCF will allow students in the consortium to attend international conferences and be a voice among giants. For example, Cody Nielson was invited to travel to Geneva and be part of the United Nation’s Advocacy Week for his peace interests in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Desiree’ Kameka will be spending two weeks in Kingston, Jamaica as a North American student delegate for the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation which is the culminating conference of the ‘Decade to Overcome Violence’ initiative. She will be working with the Ecumenical Disability Advocacy Network and as a journalist for the WSCF.

We are excited to be able to offer students of the WTC an international ecumenical connection and future opportunities!

Prayer Service for Christian Unity & Figel Address

The Prayer Service for Christian Unity and Annual Figel Address were held on February 2, 2011 at Howard University Divinity School. During this service, C.M.E. Bishop Thomas L. Hoyt, Jr., former president of the National Council of Churches, received the Consortium’s Ecumenism Award and gave his address: “Lessons of a Fanatical Ecumenist.”

In addition, Father John Crossin, Executive Director of the Washington Theological Consortium and Dean Pollard of Howard Divinity School were present, as well as students from across the Consortium. Refreshments and fellowship time in Howard’s beautiful gallery of Ethiopian art followed the service.

The Order of Service was adapted from the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute: A Ministry of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement.

Spring Fellowship Event: “Kaleidoscope: A Diverse Collection”

For this year’s Spring fellowship event, the WTC Student Board has partnered up with Washington Theological Union’s (WTU) Student Senate to host “Kaleidoscope: A Diverse Collection” on Friday, March 25, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:30pm at Washington Theological Union (6896 Laurel St., NW, Washington, DC). The night will start with Evening Prayer at 5:30pm, followed by dinner and a concert featuring performances from students and faculty of Consortium member schools. There will also be an art gallery featuring pieces by students from various Consortium schools.

In the past, this event has been an annual tradition at WTU, and we are excited to extend an invitation to all Consortium member institutions.
